Document Summary

Joints (1) synarthrosis: immovable, boney edges are close together and may interlock. Skull sutures, teeth in sockets, epiphyseal plates (2) amphiarthrosis: slightly moveable, bones connected via cartilage and/or ligament. Intervertebral discs, pubic symphysis (3) diarthrosis: fully moving (synovial joints), generally found within the limbs. Fibrous joint capsule: surrounds all synovial joints, continuous with periosteum. Synovial membrane: thin lining of connective tissue surrounding the joint inside the fibrous capsule. Joint cavity: area inside the synovial membrane, contains synovial fluid. Synovial fluid: produced by synovial membrane for lubrication, shock absorption and nutrient distribution. Articular cartilage: smooth cartilage covering articular surfaces of bones, absorbs compression on joint, and protects underlying bone. Fat pads: located outside of joint cavity, add padding around the joint. Ligaments: can be part of the fibrous capsule (capsular ligaments) or outside the capsule. Articular discs: fibrocartilaginous pads, located inside joint cavity, provide extra cushioning and make joint more stable.
