BIOL 129
Lecture 49
Human Anatomy
Cardiovascular System
Tunica Intima
• Surrounds lumen
• Simple endothelium and basement membrane
o Arteries
o Veins
• Third layer
o Collagen layer gives added strength
• Lining can become weakened or damaged
o Permeability of endothelium changes
▪ Instead of bouncing off, white blood cells
adheres with platelets
• Buildup of white blood cells and
platelets
o Plaque formation
Atherosclerosis
• Plaque formation mild in initial stages
• More plaque builds up
o Severe case
• Diameter of lumen
o Decrease in atherosclerotic vessel
• Why dangerous?
o High blood pressure
▪ Pressure breaks plaque
• Travels through blood vessels
o Blockage
▪ Stroke
▪ Makes heart work harder
▪ Blood vessel can burst
• Aneurism
o Bleed to death internally
Tunica Media
• Middle layer
• Usually the thickest layer
• Consists of:
o Smooth muscle
o Collagen
