Chapter 9. 8 opioids: heroin and prescription pain medications. The lethality of heroin abuse: heroin through inhalation is linked to neurological diseases, risk of substances cut and purity, heroin deaths are frequently consequences of usage with other drugs, unstable levels of tolerance. Treatment for heroin abuse: two primary dif culties, effects of heroin withdrawal, long-term effects of heroin craving, heroin detoxi cation, reduce level of heroin, gradual vs. cold turkey. Alternative maintenance programs: subutex lasts longer than methadone and is only needed three times a week, can be prescribed through a doctor and not a clinic, if used incorrectly, it can produce withdrawal symptoms. Behavioral and social-community programs: therapeutic communities are drug-free residential settings based on personal and social responsibility, multimodality programs are a combination of detoxi cation, naltrexone treatment, psychotherapy, and group support, recovering heroin abuser not a recovered heroin abuser.
