Northern renaissance art: north of the alps, flanders and germany. Quentin massys, adoration of the magi, 1526: beautiful but crowded, no real sense of space, gothic type madonna, christ child is adult-like, the figures are almost individualized portraits, costume, attention to individual features, attention to detail. Robert campin, merode altarpiece, 1425-28: central panel is the annunciation, there is a ton of symbolism - very important in northern renaissance art, holdovers from the gothic style, lots of detail. Mousetraps allusion to christ entrapping the devil: attention to details of everyday life, the parts are more important than the whole, luminiosity from the oil paints. Hubert and jan van eyck, the ghent altarpiece, 1432: complex, and large, huge amount of panels, richer colors and landscapes.
