Document Summary

Councilmen of the navajo were told by the federal government that they would need to eventually limit the number of sheep, horses, goats, and cattle they had. Herds traveled long distances to get water and the number of livestock overgrazed what was the sparse vegetation during the journey. Bia officials met among themselves to discuss the growing problem. It was concluded that navajo herds would have to be reduced in number if the reservation would ever want to improve. Navajos needed to be made understood of the situation. To no surprise, navajos saw it differently. Traders encouraged the expansion of their flock. Fed government added a good deal of land to reservation for a reason. Navajos believed their range should be increased. Needed to convince the united states government. More territory and more rain would solve the problem at hand. Changing political situation outside the reservation made enlarging reservation difficult. Appointed john collier as his new commissioner of indian affairs.
