Chinese exclusion act of 1882 first significant law restricting immigration into the united. Renewed in 1892 for another ten years, and in 1902 chinese immigration was made permanently illegal. Lee- the chinese exclusion act established a gatekeeping ideology in this country by: 2) leading to the establishment of immigration regulation. It established categories of desirable and undesirable, welcome and unwelcome immigrants. It suggested a language through which undesirable immigrants could be disparaged. The criteria for desirable and undesirable immigrants was shaped by notions of race, class, and gender. Desirable people in the u. s. at the time were: Later japanese, koreans, indians, mexicans and others were likened to be the same kind of problematic immigrants as the chinese. They were viewed as threats on account of their race and their status as laborers. San francisco newspapers urged readers to battle to hold the pacific coast for the white race (p. 44).
