Moral - delayed marriage, abstinence and immoral - contraception, non-procreative sex. Extreme poverty, disease, malnutrition, wars, infanticide, famine. If can"t do by negative checks then positive checks will occur. He was not able to account for upcoming innovations in agricultural technology. Variable rates throughout history may be evidence of checks (war, disease, plague, fewer children) on population (rate starts to drop off but he wasn"t able to predict that) Capitalist: population needed for workforce and consumption. Marxist: controls on fertility unequally focused on lower classes. Position focuses too much on material needs. Doesn"t account for biophilia (people need nature), personal space, privacy, etc. Neo-malthusians made more modern applications of malthusian theory. Focuses on environmental preservation and equitable distribution of resources. Call for government programs of population control.
