BIOL 003 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Golgi Apparatus, Moe Williams, Complete Protein
Document Summary
Ribosomes attached site of protein synthesis. Liver cells have lots of ser (cleanses blood) complementarity of structure and function. Sarcoplasmic reticulum (specialised type of ser found in striated muscle cells) stores calcium. Lots of sarcoplasmic reticula in skeletal & cardiac cells. Modifies proteins to perform different functions adding carbs/lipids to complete protein assembly. Tags" proteins to determine destination may travel outside cell (via exocytosis) or remain inside. Digests viruses, bacteria (that entered cell via endocytosis) and even excess/worn out organelles. Vacuole fuses with cell membrane and releases contents to outside the cell. Matter/particles from outside of the cell fuses with cell membrane, encapsulated in newly formed vacuole. Powerhouse of the cell creates energy for cell (produces atp) Provides strength and helps cell maintain certain shape (e. g. nerve cell spiky) Make up centrioles: important for cell division. Allow cilia and flagella to function: help cell to move. Can form microvilli increase cell surface area.
