ANAT 025 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Epithelium, Moe Williams, Gas Exchange
Document Summary
Gas exchange: oxygen from the atmosphere into the blood, and from the blood to the cells of the body. Oxygen utilization: we need oxygen for atp. Bring oxygen in contact with the blood. Membrane: oxygen from atmosphere will go into the blood. The membrane must be moist, have a thin wall, be highly vascular, and differentially permeable (ideally we want oxygen to come into the blood and carbon dioxide to go out and nothing else can cross the membrane) Realistically speaking, many things can cross the respiratory membrane. This anatomy must be deep within our body. The air that we are taking in must be clean, warm, and moistened. In order for this to happen, we need a series full of tubes. While we poop, we go through abdominal compression. Muscles in the rectum are not strong enough to push down poop, so the diaphragm assists the digestive system muscles. With women, this applies to child birth.
