➢ Whiteness is held up as the status quo.
➢ Whiteness surrounds us, but it often goes unnamed.
➢ Fades into the background by highlighting differences of nonwhites.
o Churches
▪ Black churches
❖ Even though their congregations are primarily white, they’re
simply called churches.
o TV shows
▪ Shows Empire or Black-ish have an all-black cast & are considered
African-American television
❖ Shows such as Girls or Game of Thrones are made up of majority or
all-white casts, but aren’t called white television.
o Art
▪ African American artists produce black music.
❖ But pop, rock, or country songs sung by white artists are not
described as white music.
▪ African American comedians write black jokes.
❖ Jokes written by Jim Gaffigan, Jon Stewart, or Larry the Cable Guy
aren’t called white jokes.
o Housing & Neighborhoods
▪ Black ghettos
▪ Mexican barrios
▪ Chinatown
▪ Native American reservations
