17 views2 pages

Document Summary

Most of the info that gets into sensory memory is forgotten, but info that we turn attention to, w/ goal of remembering it, may pass into short-term memory. Doesn"t store memory like stm, but a set of memory procedures/operations. Central executive: part of working memory that directs attention & processing: makes use of whatever strategies seem to be best for the given task. Short-term memory is limited in both length & amount of info it can hold: peterson & peterson (1959), discovered when ppl were asked to remember a list of 3-letter strings. & then immediately asked to perform a distracting task, the material was quickly forgotten. By 18 seconds it was virtually gone. If we continue to rehearse info, it will stay in stm until we stop rehearsing it. There"s a capacity limit to stm: digit span of most adults is between 5-9 digits.
