Close relationships: one of the most important tasks faced by humans is to develop successful relationships w/ others, acquaintanceships, friendships. Consensual validation: having others like & believe in the same things we do makes us feel validated in our beliefs: also an important aspect of why we are attracted to others. Self-disclosure: tendency to communicate frequently, w/out fear of reprisal, and in an accepting & empathetic manner: must be balanced. If self-disclosure is not reciprocal, relationship may not last. Proximity: extent to which ppl are physically near us: we"re more likely to develop friendships w/ ppl who are nearby, neighbors, classroom seating. Mere exposure: tendency to prefer stimuli (including but not limited to ppl) that we have seen more frequently: effect is powerful & occurs in a wide variety of situations, altruism: Any behavior that"s designed to increase another person"s welfare.
