Part three: intro to topicals & inflammatory dx. Inflamed skin & dry sensitive skin : oily skin, oozing lesions, h2o based (little, if any, oil) Intertriginous areas : oily skin , may contain etoh or acids ~ burning, non-greasy ~ patient satisfaction, easily spread ~ large or hairy areas, creams. Patho: acute inflammatory reaction, contagious, life threatening, triggered by direct exposure. Management & pharmacotherapy: dx, pmh, pe, allergy testing, non-drug treatment. Id & eliminate cause: wet compresses, drug treatment. Local anesthetics: pruritis pain relief, benzocaine, lidocaine, pramoxine, obtain all hx, gcs (glucocorticoids, po ~ refer to nurs403 mod 3, can be applied topically, antihistamines, refer to nurs403 mod 7. Topical gcs: many uses, vehicles, cream, gel, ointment, skin penetration, drying or emollient actions, relative potency. Topical gcs cont: extent of systemic absorption, depends on duration of use, surface area covered, higher absorption, axilla, face, eyelids, neck, perineum, genitalia, application of occlusive dressings.
