Document Summary

There are many different anthropological approaches to cultural analysis. Many prefer to use coordinated systems approach as alternative to understanding other cultures: system: an ordered assemblage/combo of correlated parts that form unitary whole, kinship system, family relationships, way ppl reproduce, train, & socialize children. Typical north american family is a nuclear & rather independent unit. In many countries, there may be an extended family that consists of several generations held together through male line (patrilineal) or through female line (matrilineal). Such families have a powerful influence on child rearing & nation building: educational system, how young/new members of a society are provided w/ info, knowledge, skills, & values may be formal & informal w/in any culture. How ppl learn varies by culture: economic system, manner in which the society produces & distributes goods & services is in some ways an extension of the family. Until recently, the world was divided into capitalistic/socialistic economic blocs.
