LAW 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Warren Buffett, Salomon Brothers, Legal Tests
Document Summary
Resolving ethical dilemmas: the front-page of the newspaper test: a simple but effective model for ethical evaluation that helps a manager visualize the public disclosure of proposed conduct. At salomon, we simply want no part of any activities that pass legal tests but that we, as citizens, would find offensive. (cid:499) Model requires an examination of the dilemma from all perspectives. Defining the problem & how the problem arose provides business assistance in avoiding dilemma again: ex: suppose that a supervisor is asked to provide a reference for a friend who works for her. The supervisor is hesitant because the friend has not been a very good employee. The ethical dilemma the manager believes she faces is whether to lie/tell the truth about the employee. The real ethical dilemma is why the supervisor never provided evaluation/feedback indicating the friend"s poor performance. Avoiding the problem in the future is possible through candid evaluations.
