Document Summary

Fibers are thread-like materials with a length far greater than their diameter: fabric products, clothing, carpet, rope, building components. May be transferred either directly (primary transfer) or indirectly (secondary transfer): both depend on, fabric type, duration of contact, nature of contact. Direct fiber transfer can occur from person-to-person contact. Indirect fiber transfer occurs when intermediary transfers fibers. Ex: when carpet fibers from a house attach to a person"s shoes. Cotton fabrics: produced from fibrous materials that surround seeds of cotton plant. However, it has the potential for contamination, which is a particular concern for transfer evidence. Fiber evidence can"t pinpoint alleged offender conclusively, but can aid in corroborating evidence: less common a collected fiber is, the better it corroborates evidence. Fabric details yield class evidence: one fiber might be associated w/ a particular source in a different place, but not necessarily w/ same source.
