Document Summary

Binary compounds: composed of 2 elements: binary ionic compounds (i), contain positive ion (cation) Always written first in formula: also contains negative ion (anion) In naming these compounds, the following rules apply: Monatomic ( one-atom ) cation takes name from element name. Ex: na+ is called sodium in names of compounds containing this ion. Monatomic anion is named by taking root of element name & adding ide. Ex: cl ion is called chloride: binary ionic compounds (ii): Ion w/ higher charge has name ending in ic. Ion w/ lower charge has name ending in ous. Fec12 = ferrous chloride: roman numerals: Required only in cases where more than 1 ionic compound forms between given pair of elements. Most commonly occurs for compounds containing transition metals: often form more than one cation. Group 1a elements: common metals that don"t require roman numerals, form only 11 ions. Group 2a elements: form only 21 ions.
