More than 1. 3 million new cases of cancer are diagnosed each year in the u. s. 25% of u. s citizens will develop some type of cancer in their lifetimes. If more cancers were diagnosed earlier, over one-half of cancer patients could be saved. Cancer: group of diseases characterized by uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells. Results from the abnormal growth of mutated cells. A collection of over 100 different diseases that can influence almost every body tissue. Common types of cancer: prostate, breast, skin, stomach, lung, colon, and kidney. Tumor (neoplasm): a group of abnormal cells.
