ANSI 3543 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Flint, Michigan, Fluorine, Arsenic
Document Summary
Needed in largest quantities of all nutrients. Transport medium: blood ~90% water, lymph, interstitial fluid between cells, intracellular fluid inside cell, feces, urine, sweat. Temperature regulator: high specific heat traps heat, high heat of vaporization releases heat. Lubrication synovial fluid: muscles glide past one another, spinal column cushion, eye. Cell turgidity and shape: water needed for every cell, moves freely across cell membrane, moves in and out of cell due to osmotic pressure. Hydrolysis: breakdown of water to h+ and oh, metabolism most chemical rxn require h2o. Influenced by: environment, diet, age, *activity, lactation. Normally allowed to consume water ad libitum. Specific water needs: feedlot steer 4-5lbs of water: 1 lb of feed, finishing pig 2-3 lbs of water: 1 lb of feed, lactating cow 3-4 gallons: 1 gallon milk, broiler 5-15 oz. Body heat production: cell is a miniature furnace exothermic, metabolism, digestion, fermentation, muscle activity.
