Experimental Design:!
Two or more groups?!
•Lots of experiments split participants into 2 groups!
•Listen to classical v. Pop music!
•Write art. High or low power!
•Necessary to have “baseline” group that does nothing?!
•Depends on research question (e.g. does high power reduce perspective taking
relative to low power? v. !
Cause and effect!
•New language from now on!
•Cause: independent variable (IV)!
•Effect: dependent variable (dv)!
ex: does frustration (iv) affect aggression (dv) , do neg. stereotypes (iv) affect
performance (dv)? , does attractiveness (iv) affect hiring rates (dv) ? , does power (iv)
affect perspective taking (dv)!
The logic of experimentation!
•Random assignment!
•2 or more equivalent groups (conditions) !
•Treat identically except…!
•Manipulation of independent variable!
•What is the effect of the dependent variable?!
Random assignment!
•Before random assignment: matching!
•Assign 1 person to experimental group (iv present)!
•Assign other, very similar person to the control group (iv absent)!
