Chinese instituted something called the canton system: 1700-1842, strategy the chinese empire used to ensure all trade with europeans happened in one place (qing dynasty) So it can be controlled, monitored and taxed. Japan the tokugawa: 1603-1868, decided to close off the country to foreigners. This policy was known as sakoku; in place from 1630s-1850s. We trace the modern nation state to western europe. The protestant reformation: movement in christianity that broke away from the dominance of the institution of the pope, once the protestant reformation happens the idea that there is a unified. Christian europe crumbles: there was an intense rivalry that emerged and many states went to war. Known as the religious wars, aftermath of the protestant reformation: the intense rivalry resulted in the invention of the modern nation state. Some states were able to out perform their competitors: When these wars ended, states had refined and improved their ability to control their resources.
