HIST 1330 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Mughal Empire, Shia Islam, Ottoman Empire
Document Summary
Production for subsistence: people produce food for what they need to survive. Production for the market: producing food to sell for money so you can purchase what you need to survive. Largest schism is between the ruler and the ruled; schism is very wide: the ruled cannot even fathom what the rulers live like. Very minimal interaction between the rulers and ruled: seldom saw them, may once or twice a year for tax collection. Family was the fundament social unit: entire world revolved around your family. The world is defined as a system of global empires, meaning that the world is divided into political and economic units that are semi-self contained. Each state can only influence a territory that it can conquer: influence goes only as far as your army can go . These states are largely economic self sufficient, meaning they can produce what they need to survive.
