The science of acoustics is a branch of physics and involves the study of sound. The disturbance will cause a change in molecular air pressure. Brownian movement- air molecules are not lined up neatly, random air molecule motion. Refraction- when molecules return to their original position. Propagation is a combination of the two. It is the number of cycles per unit of time. Sound has many different characteristics and frequency is one of them. Each opening and closing of vocal cords is called a frequency. Pure tone- sound/vibration with only one frequency, not a speech sound, must be made in labs. Complex waves follow patterns w multiple frequencies. Noise has no patterns and too many frequencies to have a frequency component. Fo si the rate at which vocal folds vibrate. Magnitude of the displacement of a wave. Amount of air and pressure of explosion determines the loudness. Pure- cannot be made by speech, pattern, only one frequencies.
