PSYCH 3550 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Monoamine Oxidase A, Quantitative Trait Locus, Critical Period
Document Summary
Chapter 3 - biology & behavior: nature & nurture, genetic & environmental factors. Genetic and environmental influences: heredity and environment influence characteristics, complex interplay between gene and experience. Three key elements: genotype: all of the inherited genetic material, phenotype: what is expressed; the observable expression of genotype including expressions and behavior, environment: every aspect of individual, and their surroundings, other than genes. Genetic materials is passed on as chromosomes: long, threadlike molecules. Parent"s genotype influencing child"s genotype made up of dna. Genes (sections of chromosomes) = basic units of heredity for all living things; 2% of the human genome: human heredity & sex determination. Sex chromosomes: women provide the x, men provide x or y for baby. Changes in sections of the dna caused by random or environmental factors. Shuffling chromosomes in sperm and egg; chance determines which member of pair goes into new sperm and egg. Sections of dna switch from one chromosome to another during meiosis.
