Theory - general explanation of how things happen. Ir theory - explanation of state behavior in international system. Not actual theories, lenses to look at the world. Reification, if we think they"re real, they become real. See ir as continuous struggle for power among states. But destructive effects can be controlled (kantian tripod) Potential for + change with systems deeper integration in these effects. Role of human action and agency in ir. R: don"t provoke, but be aware, deterrence by balancing power. C: see as friends not enemies, fear of taking over socially constructed. The long peace - last war was wwii.
