20 views2 pages

Document Summary

Piano-playing fungus (or actually, net-like slime mold) How to tell if a mushroom is poisonous--all of these are false. In reality: largest cause of mushroom poisoning is when somebody travels outside of their familiar home and sees a mushroom that looks identical to one they know from their hometown. Mushrooms produce a wide variety of toxic compounds. Some toxins act immediately, some have an extended latent phase (20 min. to 12 hr). Some become toxic if you drink alcohol within 24-48 hours of consuming the mushroom. Some people may have allergic reactions to otherwise harmless mushrooms. Some people may be allergic not to mushroom itself but compounds from the wood it is growing on. Don"t need to memorize the name of the toxin, but should look out for some of the systems for the groups. None of these toxins are transdermal--you must eat it in order to get sick.
