Hw for next time: chapter 3, pages 62-77. History and change and keeping track of those. Allows you to speak to the uniqueness of your own thoughts. A conventional system of signs that allows for the creative communication of meaning: conventional = relationship between signifier and signified is arbitrary, signs = linguistic form (signifier) + referent (signified, system = patterned and follows rules. Native speakers of a language do not need to be taught these rules: creative = language lets you express infinitely new meanings and patterns. Recursion = embed one structure within a larger structure of the same type. I know that you know that i know that you know . Each subsystem has a set of units and rules. While the content of our investigation is english-specific, the tools can be applied to the analysis of any language.
