Renaissance means rebirth, meaning the rebirth of europeans" interest in greek and roman scholarship. A humanist is someone who studies ancient greek and roman texts (interested in their writing, eventually wanted to replicate their architecture/style too) Baldassare castiglione wrote a book explaining how to be a courtier (someone who hangs around a prince"s court). A courtier needs to be good with war, sport, writing, dancing, music, speaking, etc. Baldassare basically meant that a courtier needed to be awesome in all kinds of different skills. Renaissance focused on the realistic depiction of the individual. Brunelleschi did some stuff that looks pretty realistic. We now take a short break to argue about the differences between art and design again. Brunelleschi made the doorways (three of them) at the baptistry in italy. The competition was to design a thing that depicted the story of abraham and isaac. Donatello made some dinner scene thing and it was used in a church.
