Cultivation: how the media influence your perception of the world. Media effects: the world is seen as a much scarier place than it is in reality. Why the discrepancy: ethnic blame discourse. Minority crimes are portrayed in media exaggerates the threat they pose to the majority group. Power and economics: white"s eth(cid:374)o(cid:272)e(cid:374)tris(cid:373); o(cid:449)(cid:374) the (cid:373)edia a(cid:374)d portray positives of whites and stereotypical negatives of blacks. Media effects on perception: most notorious distortions (mainly television) Women are more likely than not be beautiful, victims of violent crimes. People of color, especially hispanics and african-americans, are largely non- existent, and commit crimes at even greater rates than they do in reality. Doctors are everywhere, and can cure almost anything. There are to(cid:374)s of poli(cid:272)es, a(cid:374)d oh yeah, they"re (cid:271)rillia(cid:374)t. There are tons of missing children, most of whom are abducted by strangers and never found. Cases are solved within hours! (every 40 secs a new case, 85-90% are kids)
