The form of government, holidays, national heroes unify and create a common culture for people who share the same instituitions. Ex: anyone can be muslim no matter their nationality, age or race because they share the same beliefs and celebrate the same holidays. Standpoints: position from which people see the world based on social and economic status. A rich person has different experiences from a poor person, so they have very different standpoints. Social or economic speech communities: groups of people who use and interpret symbols the same way. People who live, study or work together have shared experiences, norms, ways of communicating. Ex: frats or sororities, wear different letters, have different mascots and have private ceremonies. Ex: a couple, they have anniversaries, rules, wedding rings, traditions.
