Review of primates: what"s a primate, mammalian traits. Primates: humans, apes, monkeys, prosimians, primates are generalized, share a number of traits. Primate traits: erect upper body posture, generalized limb structure, prehensibility. Generally omnivores: most have 4 kinds of teeth. Human dental formula: 2-1-2-3: emphasis on visual sense, less emphasis on olfactory. Stereoscopic vision: expansion and increased complexity of the brain, post orbital bar, auditory bulla. Humans only to live past reproductive age. Can be mix of both or one exclusively. Terrestrial: vertical clinging and leaping, knuckle walking, fist walking, brachiation. Activity patterns: diurnal (most are awake during day, nocturnal. Prosimians: 3 groups: lemurs, lorises, tarsiers, located in africa, asia, india and madagascar, least derived (most primitive, lack a rhinarium. Open nostrils; wet: dental comb, grooming claw, lemurs. Most live in large social groups: lorises. Cryptic locomotion (move very slowly to get away from predators) Partner stays until offspring can fend for self. No rhinarium, no dental comb, have postorbital plate.
