ANATOMY 2300.01 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Pelvic Cavity, Pubic Tubercle, Epiphyseal Plate
Document Summary
Called hematopoiesis- process of producing red, white blood cells, and platelets, red bone marrow is where it takes place, red bone marrow can be found in the bone. Compact bone-outside of bone, dense and thick, looks very solid to the naked eye, under a microscope there a ton of canals for blood vessels. Spongy bone- inside of bone, honeycomb appearance, bone spicules (trabeculae), that are laid around stress lines, looks very random but its not. In between the bone spicules there can be red marrow (hematopoiesis) or yellow marrow (energy storage: long bone structure. 1. diaphysis- the shaft running along the long axis of the bone, compact bone on the outside and on the inside there is a big space known as the medullary cavity where there can be red marrow or yellow marrow. As you age your red marrow turns to mostly yellow marrow, donation of red marrow, hip bones have a lot of red marrow left over.
