Race: a group sharing apparent physical traits deemed by society to be socially significant. A social concept, not a scientific one. Skin color and texture of hair are two distinguishing racial characteristics; e. g. black, brown skin. Racial categories: the process of assigning people into different racial categories, is known as a social process. Racialization i. e. , society assigns people to racial categories. Extension of racial meaning to individuals and groups and placing into a racial hierarchy (grosfoguel, 2004; omi and winant 2015; telles and ortiz 2008) Ethnicity: a group"s national origin, language, and cultural or religious practices. Can self-identify, but usually need acceptance or acknowledgment by a larger group. Ethnic groups are conscious of their common cultural bond; Minority & dominant groups they share an ethnic identity. Sociologists differentiate between membership in a minority or a majority (dominant) group. Those in power hold a high status in society. Those without power hold a lower status in society.
