Psychology A185 Lecture Notes - Lecture 24: Marvin Minsky, Eidetic Memory, Echoic Memory
Document Summary
Memories of childhood do not include much prior to the age of 3-4. Why? not fully developed; long-term memories not fully developed. Brain regions responsible for encoding long term memories still immature . Retrieval cues not as rich or meaningful : language is only partially developed. Lack sense of self for memory reference point sense of self is important at that time as a central point for which we can connect memories to. Need sense of self to preserve long-term declarative memories. Photographic (eidetic) memory: ability to recall images, sounds or objects in memory with extreme accuracy and in abundant volume. Dr. marvin minsky (the society of mind) unable to verify claims of eidetic memory and considered reports to be an unfounded myth . Many reports can be attributed to exceptional use of mnemonic strategies. Some reports (e. g. savants) with exceptional visual or auditory memory. Study in the afternoon vs. movie closer to sleeping to continue consolidating memories.
