They are important, salient, long lasting, and central to people"s well being than any other relationship have. Relationships with siblings are the longest relationships in life you"ll ever. Family life is a universal experience, yet no 2 individuals have the exact same experience. Our perspectives shape the experience we have. Communication serves to construct and reflect family relationships. Families socialize members to their underlying values and beliefs about life issues (ex. Do a great deal using communication to socialize members. Ex: families who verbally express love vs. nonverbally expressing it. Families have been defined in terms of: A group of intimates who generate a sense of home and group identity; complete with strong ties of loyalty and emotion, and experience history and future, (wamboldt & reiss, 1989) Ex: consider my housemates family according to this definition. Families use comm to develop, identify as a family, & carry out being a family over the life course.
