Professor wants to argue that they weren"t necessarily uprisings to create democracy. Different people use different terms, with different meanings. Spring protests are buds of blossoming democracy; very hopeful; will lead to democracy. Didn"t actually take place in the spring. Arab spring implies that arab world was coming out of dormant/silent arab winter. Not really true politics and struggles existed before 2011. Not true in many cases, state apparatus remained, even if head executive was overthrown. Implies contagion, revolts don"t operate in isolation. A lot of truth to this; protestors did interact. Silences role of individual protestors/organizations that created protests. Implies that each wave is a replica of the previous wave not true, each protest is distinct. Divides into revolution forces and counter-revolution forces. Social movement in the name of jobs, freedom, national dignity and the people want the overthrow of the regime .
