Monarchs have close relationship with the clergy. Monarchs stress their paternalistic relationship with the nation. Monarchies portray themselves as playing groups of off each-other monarchs are the ultimate arbitrators. Ex: jordan pretty evenly split between tribal jordanians and east bankers; the king plays these populations off of each-other to justify his rule as a uniting factor. Ex: uae division between citizens and non-citizens; the monarch provides agreement between the two. Key difference: subjects of republics are urban peasants, military, or state employees; social base of monarchies are large land-owners, notable families, religious powers, and the upper echelons of society. The set themselves up for power by putting family members in high positions. Many explanations fall short under close scrutinization.
