Breaking the news is never easy as a healthcare worker since there are so many considerations involved. Risk communication is an important part of clinical practice, especially for nurses since patient education is significant and required to be documented now. However, different communication approaches place differing emphasis on risk communication and bring up different ethical issues. The traditional paternalistic model emphasizes utility over autonomy, and risk communication can be omitted if it is not perceived to be in the best interests of the patient. Shared decision-making places the emphasis on optional" autonomy, and risk communication is an integral requirement for this. (shanmugaratnam & edwards, 2016) different healthcare workers employ different consultation styles with their patients. Choosing different approach in the risk communication involves ethical choices. We can compare and contrast the two different approaches using the three ethical principles of autonomy, utility and justice. The paternalistic approach emphasizes utility over patient"s autonomous choice of best interests.
