HIST-UA 9 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Scientific Management, Vertical Integration, Social Darwinism
Document Summary
Scientific management is also known as taylorism and it is a technique for production. In this system the production was made by dividing the tasks and speeding the production process. By making division of labor there wasn"t a need for skilled workers. This meant that the workers could be easily been changed. Taylor felt that it was more efficient and faster for workers to use modern machines to perform simple tasks for production. That is why taylor"s ideas have been controversial. Taylor felt that scientific management was a way to make the human labor and the machines to work together. But we see that it also made the employer have more power in the workplace. Due to scientific management there was more emphasis on research for the industries. It was also significant in that it allowed for the development for the assembly lines which was shown by henry ford: horizontal and vertical integration.
