HIST-UA 9 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Waltham-Lowell System, Cyrus Mccormick
Document Summary
The lowell factory system was different from the european factory system. It relied on young unmarried women that were working. The british factory systems were very bad and women had to work in awful conditions. The lowell factories were clean working conditions compared to the ones in europe. The people were fed and they were carefully watched if something did happen. The lowell system did pay low wages to the women but it better than the system in europe. European system was stricter and didn"t like any immoral women. The system didn"t last for long because the owners found it very hard to keep up the living standards and the nice conditions. The wages started to decline, the work hours increased and the conditions started to become worse. There were even a union for the lowell factories but the strikes failed and a recession pretty much destroyed the organization.
