The hill people lived in the appalachian ranges east of the mississippi or in the areas cut from the commercial world plantation system. These people isolated themselves from the lives of their region. They practiced a simple form of agriculture, had no slaves and liked being separate. They didn"t grow extra food, had little ways to get money and traded for supplies they couldn"t produce. They weren"t affiliated with the cotton production: peculiar institution. Peculiar institution meant that slavery was distinctive and special in america. The south was literally the only part of the western world except some other south america countries where slavery still existed. Slavery isolated the whites and blacks into a racial line and it also made a distinct society and culture for the african americans. Slavery made a unique bond with the slave and its master because both of them had to depend on each other: gang system. The gang system was made by the slave-owners.
