The freemen"s bureau the freedmen"s bureau helped african-americans legalize their marriages, attend school and buy property. Even though the slaves were freed, they had to face racism/discrimination, and some slaves who were free did not know of their freedom. Now because african americans were not property, they were targeted by different groups and harassed, and many african americans were killed. Back then, since they were considered property, killing a slave would be violating another man"s property. Now since they are free, abusing them did not offend anyone, and the kkk was free to kill slaves as they pleased. To get back on their feet, african americans had to work for the old masters, and this time they had to pay to live on the land. They were paid very little as well, so in the end, they went back to being slaves. 13 th amendment - abolished slavery and involuntary servitude (except as punishment for a crime)
