Representative assemblies firmly established in the colonies - example of consent of the governed because many men had property and voted. Virginia house of burgesses- first legislature in america. North- people chose own ministers as leaders b/c england didn"t let them do so. Puritans also believed that church members should elect colony"s government. Legislatures dominated colonial gov"t- controlled distribution of land, construct public buildings and facilities such as roads, ferries, and wharves, had to establish new towns, schools, and civil and criminal courts. Governor, king"s agent in colonies, had executive power. Colonial legislatures had power to pass laws, colonial courts heard cases. English heritage + representative self-gov"t american gov"t. Brits thought that colonies existed for english benefit. However, colonies pretty much governed themselves b/c britain gave them salutary neglect from 1607-1757.
