CM-UY 1004 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Bohr Model, Alpha Particle, Octet Rule
Document Summary
Gold foil experiment: rutherford designed an experiment to show that the atom is mostly empty space and not a plum pudding. He did this by shooting positively charged alpha particles at a gold foil and detecting if they passed through it or if they got deflected. Rutherford ended up finding that most of the alpha particles passed unaffected. Since like charges repel, the object that repelled the alpha particle was positively charged and densely packed. This experiment proved two things: the existence of the proton & the atom is mostly empty space. Niels bohr: bohr discovered that the atom was composed of electrons orbiting a dense, positively charged nucleus, resulting from the protons, in addition to neutrons. However, he figured out that the atoms had their electrons organized into what he called shells . Stated the neutron was inside the nucleus, in addition to the proton 8. Discovered that the electrons were grouped into shells .
