From cultus = to worship, to cultivate, to inhabit. Sum total of the ways of living built up by a group of human beings and transmitted from generation to generation. Visual, aural sensory some sort of representation of life. Culture invests art with meaning and power. Human being have the ability to create symbols, make objects. The main goal of art history is to determine the original context of art pieces. Scanning, radiocarbon dating (good methods that don"t destroy) Dating something can destroy a work of art. To date chronologically, you can see the physical evidence. Records of payment (who was hired to build such thing) People and objects that are depicted in the work of art. Stylistic manners: style denotes time, region and place of origin. Genre painting: scenes of everyday life painting. Belong to a certain school of art. Caves: painting in darkest places of cave, had to burn pots for light to see.
