ANTH-UA 1 Lecture Notes - Bipedalism, Folivore, Knuckle-Walking
Document Summary
We and most new world and old world monkeys are diurnal. Launches off to different branches via powerful hind legs. Bipedal hopping position because of long legs. No exclusively arboreal terrestrial walking primates (except one) Branch running and walking, move across large branches quickly. Not entirely exclusively one type of locomotion. Ground running and walking, similar length of limbs. Clawed branch running and walking (marmosets and tamarins) callitrichins. Long hands, claw at the tree and drink at resin. To come up they use claws like a climbing pick. Slow climbing (lorises), stretching and bridging between branches, powerful grasping on branches with all four limbs. Bad at walking bipedally, but instead use knuckle walking quadrupedally. Easy to get fruits to pull it close to feed on fruit. Long arms extend and walking on their knuckles. Chimpanzees- climbing up trees but also knuckling-walkers. Major food items: fruits, leaves, insects, naturally damaged branches with gums resin.
