Relationship between signs and objects; uses cat as an example [metalinguistic] Relationship between territory and map: representation of the reality and the reality go together. We don"t question the word sign when we point to an object. The reason we don"t is because we have a consensus. We tend to forget the discrimination between territory and its interpretation in a map. Flag example: we need a marker/physical object that refers to our identity. Also means imperialism, history of violence, slavery, etc: people fight and die over a piece of fabric; has an iconic power, mood-signs. Ex: dog stretching because he wants to play: messages stimulate mood signs. Ex: dogs baring teeth show signs of threat. No immediate connection between the mood and action, but still there is a message: message through play.
