Document Summary
When you decide whether something is a member of a category based on if it fits the definition of that category. For most natural objects, definitions don"t work e. g chair. Refers to the idea that things in a particular category resemble one another in various ways. Don"t all have to meet definition, allows for variation in category. eg. chairs in different shapes and sizes. High = members share more characteristics with one another (more overlap), low- don"t overlap so much. When members of the category are compared to a average representation of the category - typical prototype refers to an average of members of the category that are commonly experienced e. g. birds - prototype based on birds we usually see, like sparrows, pigeons, robins etc. High score - resembles prototype more, low score- deviates more from prototype. Strong relationship between these categories because high prototypicality --> high family resemblance. What does the sentence verification technique prove? (smith)
