Follow the student"s lead in teaching: anything can be teachable moment, meals, car trips, dressing, play time, watching tv. It is planned; instructional goals are pre-identified: naturalistic reinforcers are used. Establishing operation: make sure it is in effect prior to teaching. Support the student in providing an elaborated response. 4 levels of prompts to use with it. 30-s delay when a student shows a desire for an object. After 30-s, if no response, prompt to engage, eg. what do you want? . L4 provide a response the learner can imitate: use least-intrusive level possible, use behavior-specific praise. Student tried to grab toy truck from cabinet when teacher opened the cabinet: teacher gently holds student"s hand, preventing them from taking truck out; looks at child with head tilted to one side, eyes open wide. Yes, truck! and lets the child take the car out. She sits with child and says you have a red truck- what color is it? .
