Document Summary
The rehearsal systems approach: an alternative view of the structure of memory, the rehearsal systems approach does not require a short term memory storage, on this view, the only storage is in long term memory. Consolidation: the information that is acquired and processed through encoding must then be transferred to a permanent, long-term form, this process of solidifying memory is called consolidation, working memory is very much a short term process. We might not know how long exactly something is worked with in working memory, but we know we"re talking about something like minutes or hours. Consolidation, on the other hand, is a much slower process. And it looks like the way that the brain does this is by consulting the state of the body at the time that it"s learned. If there"s a lot of stress hormone release and other markers of arousal, this most likely means that the experience was important, and should be remembered.
